On 06th September 2024, the students of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering from Mewar University went on one-day industrial visit to wind power plant of Wonder Cement maintained and operated by Regen Infrastructure and Services Pvt. Ltd., a prominent wind power plant situated in Dalot, Pratapgarh, Rajasthan. Organized by the Department of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, the visit aimed to provide the 53 participating students with an opportunity to observe and understand the practical aspects of wind energy generation. The students were accompanied by their coordinators, Mr. Dinesh Kumar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Mr. Suraj Kumhar, Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, who facilitated and supervised the entire visit. The initiative was also supported and appreciated by Prof. Dr. Alok Misra, Vice-Chancellor of Mewar University, and Mr. Kapil Nahar, Deputy Dean of Engineering, who emphasized the importance of hands-on industrial exposure in the students' academic and professional development.
The primary objective of this visit was to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world applications by exposing the students to the intricate mechanical and electrical operations involved in wind power generation. The visit offered a unique opportunity to understand how wind energy is harnessed and transformed into electrical power. Students were introduced to the gear systems used in wind turbines, which play a critical role in regulating rotor speed and optimizing the conversion of kinetic energy from wind into mechanical energy. Additionally, they observed the working of synchronous generators, which convert this mechanical energy into electrical energy, and learned about the inverters used in power distribution.
The highlight of the visit was the detailed explanation of energy transformation processes at the wind power plant. Students were able to witness how wind energy, captured by the turbine blades, is converted into electrical power, demonstrating the practical application of theoretical knowledge. The experts at the plant provided a comprehensive overview of the entire energy conversion process, from capturing wind energy to the final stage of electrical power distribution. They also discussed the plant’s energy production capacity and shared insights on how to measure and optimize the efficiency of the turbines in varying wind conditions. This firsthand experience helped students to appreciate the complexities and challenges of wind energy production, such as maintenance and operational efficiency, in a real-world setting.
In addition to the technical learning, the students had the privilege of interacting with the site incharge Mr. Deep Singh, plant’s engineers and technical staff. These experts provided valuable insights into the operational challenges and maintenance strategies employed at the plant, while also discussing the broader significance of renewable energy in meeting India's energy demands. This interaction proved to be an enriching experience, offering students a glimpse into the day-to-day workings of a wind power plant and the technical expertise required to manage it effectively.
The industrial visit was highly appreciated by the university's leadership. Prof. Dr. Alok Misra lauded the departments for their initiative in organizing the visit, highlighting its role in enhancing the students' learning experience by connecting academic concepts with practical applications. He emphasized the growing importance of renewable energy and how visits like this prepare future engineers for industry challenges. Similarly, Mr. Kapil Nahar praised the faculty for their efforts in arranging the visit and reiterated the importance of practical exposure for engineering students. Both expressed their hopes for continued collaboration with industry to provide students with similar learning opportunities in the future. The entire management of Mewar University provided unwavering support to ensure the smooth execution of the visit.
