Guest lecture for Mechanical and Civil Engineering students.
The Department of Mechanical Engineering organized a guest lecture on Fracture Mechanics aspects in structural design & Impact response of thin walled structure on 23rd May 2022. Dr. Gaurav Tiwari (Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering Department, VNIT Nagpur) delivered the lecture. The guest lecture focused on two main topics: Fracture Mechanics aspects in structural design and Impact response of thin-walled structures. The lecture was delivered by a distinguished speaker with many years of experience in the field of mechanical engineering and structural design.
The first part of the lecture discussed Fracture Mechanics aspects in structural design. The speaker explained how Fracture Mechanics is used to study the behavior of materials under stress and how it can be used to predict and prevent failures in structures. He emphasized the importance of understanding the properties of the material being used in a structure, and how these properties can affect its behavior under different types of loads. The speaker also discussed some of the common fracture mechanisms that can occur in structures, such as fatigue, brittle fracture, and ductile fracture. He explained how each of these mechanisms can be identified and how they can be prevented through proper design and material selection.
In the second part of the lecture, the speaker focused on the impact response of thin-walled structures. He explained how thin-walled structures, such as those used in aerospace and automotive industries, are particularly susceptible to damage from impact loads. He discussed some of the challenges involved in designing these structures to withstand impact, and how Fracture Mechanics can be used to predict the response of the structure to different types of impact loads. The speaker also discussed some of the common techniques used in testing the impact response of thin-walled structures, such as drop testing and ballistic testing. He explained how these tests can be used to determine the failure mode of the structure and to optimize its design for impact resistance.
Overall, the guest lecture provided valuable insights into the application of Fracture Mechanics in structural design and the impact response of thin-walled structures. The speaker's experience and expertise in the field made the lecture informative and engaging, and the audience left with a better understanding of the importance of these topics in mechanical engineering and structural design
The lecture was very interactive and feedback from the students is very positive.
