The Department of Civil Engineering celebrated Engineers’ Day at the Gangrar Campus of Mewar University. In India, Engineer's day is celebrated on September 15 every year. This day is celebrated in the honour of renowned Indian Engineer “Sir Mokshagundam Vishveshvarayya”. Mewar University follows a tradition of celebrating birth anniversaries of great leaders, saints, patriots and eminent personalities in different fields. Continuing with the tradition, Civil Engineering Department organized a stage to give an insight about Sir MV, his achievements and his contribution to the field of engineering and technology in India.
Sir MV was born in 1861 September 14 in a Telugu Brahmin family to Mokshagundam Srinivasa Shastry and Venkatalakshmamma in Muddenahalli village, 40 miles from Bangalore, India. He enrolled for primary school in Chikballapur and attended high school in Bangalore. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Central College,Bangalore affiliated to Madras University in 1881 and later studied civil engineering at the prestigious College of Engineering, Pune, popularly known as COEP. Upon graduating as an engineer, Visvesvaraya took up a job with the Public Works Department (PWD) of Mumbai and was later invited to join the Indian Irrigation Commission.. After India attained independence, he was awarded with the nation's highest honour, the Bharat Ratna, in 1955. He was awarded several honorary doctoral degrees like D.Sc., LL.D., D.Litt. from eight universities in India. He was president of the 1923 Session of the Indian Science Congress. Sir M.V. was awarded honorary Membership of London Institution of Civil Engineers for an unbroken 50 years. He was the most popular person from Karnataka, in a newspaper survey conducted by Prajavani.
The function at Mewar University Gangrar started with a tribute to Maa Saraswati, the Goddess of knowledge. The guests were welcomed by the Head of Department Mr. Abhijeet Kishore. The function was presided over by the Dean (Basic Sciences), Dean (Management), Registrar and Director (Training, Placement & Admissions). Entire engineering fraternity and other departments paid their their tribuite to Sir MV by being a part of the function. Dean (Management) shared his views about Sir MV’s contribution to the field of engineering and technology in India and the works done by him that have inspired and motivated the young and dynamic future engineers getting their training under esteemed institutes like Mewar University. The function further saw cultural participation from the student side and some craft work creation by Civil Engineering students of Mewar University. The function ended on a high note with vote of thanks speech by the head of department.
